Dr. Tamara Minko is a Distinguished Professor and Chair of the Department of Pharmaceutics at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, a member of the Cancer Institute of New Jersey and Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences Institute. Dr. Minko’s current research interests include nanoscale-based targeted delivery of drugs, peptides, siRNA and antisense oligonucleotides in order to enhance the efficiency of treatment and imaging; nanoparticle formulation, characterization and testing; preclinical in vitro and in vivo evaluation of anticancer therapeutics; orthotopic and ectopic animal models of cancer, lung diseases and fibrosis; personalized medicine; hypoxia; mechanisms of multidrug resistance and their suppression; intracellular fate and molecular mechanisms of action of drugs; pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics.

She is an author and co-author of more than 400 publications (peer-reviewed papers, books and textbook chapters, conference proceedings/abstracts, and patents). My teaching and research activities and interests are in the frontiers of renewable energy sources. My research primarily focuses in the areas of integrated fuel cell technology, energy storage materials, ion conducting membranes, thin-film coating. In the area of Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells, our focus is primarily to produce cost effective and durable fuel cells by addressing three major challenges: (1) reduce catalyst cost, (2) mitigate water flooding, and (3) produce oxidation resistant supporting materials. To reduce the cost of catalysts in fuel cells, my laboratory is developing new nano-catalysts by reducing the amounts of platinum. We have successfully developed thin-film catalyst which is being incorporated in the proton exchange membrane fuel cells. To mitigate water flooding, we have also reengineered membrane electrode assembly (MEA) by incorporating siloxane polymers to make durable fuel cells. These reengineered MEAs showed exception promise to alleviate water flooding. To prolong the life-time of fuel cells, we have also developed oxidation resistive new supporting materials, boron-carbon meso-spheres that exhibit higher electrical conductivity than carbon nanotubes. For Intermediate Temperature Fuel Cells, we are developing new electrolytes and catalysts.

My laboratory has also designed power distribution sources for hybrid vehicles by using fuel cells, batteries, and ultracapacitors. Our design indicates that mid-size hybrid vehicle can be driven over 200 miles without recharging battery or using gasoline. Finally, we are developing coating technology to coat super conducting wires and cables.

All these work have appeared in various journals of international reputation such as Journal of Power Sources and Journal of the American Chemical Society. Intellectual properties produced from my laboratory deal with (1) hydrogen sensor, (2) nano-catalyst, (3) re-engineered MEA, (4) supporting materials for battery and fuel cells, and (5) power sources for hybrid vehicle.

Kah-Wee ANG received the B.Eng. (1st class honors) degree in electrical and electronic engineering from Nanyang Technological University in 2002, the S.M. degree in advanced materials under the Singapore-MIT Alliance (SMA) program in 2004, and the Ph.D. degree in electrical and computer engineering from the National University of Singapore in 2008.

He was a manager for the non-planar CMOS scaling project at SEMATECH, USA, where he led a team in developing advanced CMOS manufacturing technology for sub-22nm node and beyond. In 2012, he led the development of silicon photonics technology at GLOBALFOUNDRIES (Technology Development Department). He was the Head of Research Office at the Institute of Microelectronics, A*STAR, prior to his move to the National University of Singapore where he is currently an Assistant Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering. He is also an Editorial Board Member for Scientific Reports, a journal from Nature Publishing Group. His research interests are in nano-electronics and nano-photonics technologies. He has authored or co-authored more than 125 journal and conference papers, including 33 invited papers/talks, 4 US patents, and a book chapter.

He was conferred the President’s Technology Award in 2010, the highest national honors bestowed on exceptional research scientists and engineers for their excellent achievements in science and technology. In 2008, he received the IEEE Paul Rappaport Award for the best paper published in IEEE Transactions on Electron Devices. In 2007, he won the IEEE Electron Devices Society Graduate Fellowship Award and the inaugural TSMC Outstanding Student Research Gold Award in electronic device and process technologies category. Giorgia Pastorin received her MSc degree in Pharmaceutical Chemistry and Technology in 2000 and her Ph.D. in Medicinal Chemistry in 2004 from the University of Trieste (Italy). She spent two years of her postDoc at the CNRS in Strasbourg (France), where she specialized in drug delivery. She joined the National University of Singapore (NUS) in June 2006, as Assistant Professor in the Department of Pharmacy-Faculty of Science. She was promoted to Associate Professor in 2011, Assistant Head in 2014 and Deputy Head in 2016; she is currently Assistant Dean (Research & Development) at the Faculty of Science and Director of the Pharmaceutical Innovation and Research Center in NUS. Her research interest is focused on drug delivery, with the purpose of enhancing the pharmacological effects of bioactive agents (such as Pt-based anticancer complexes) while minimizing undesirable side effects. Recently, her BioNanoTechnology (BNT) group developed cell-derived nanovesicles (CDNs) and biohybrids as novel biocompatible Extracellular Vesicle mimetics for targeted drug delivery. Her approach of using unconventional yet efficacious cell-derived nanocarriers has become her signature program, resulting in new invention disclosures, industry engagements and even an international BioDrone award in 2021. She is the sole and co-Editor, respectively, of two books related to drug delivery and author in more than 160 articles in internationally peer-reviewed journals including Nature Nanotechnology, Biomaterials, Journal of Extracellular Vesicles, Angewandte etc. For the work performed by her BNT group in NUS, she received the Young Scientist Award (2015) in NUS and she has been invited at prestigious international conferences as plenary or keynote speaker. Dr Katharina Richter is a biomedical researcher with global work stints in Germany, New Zealand, Switzerland, Denmark, Belgium and Australia. Superbugs, or antibiotic-resistant bacteria, pose one of the greatest threats to human health worldwide, causing over 1.3 million deaths every year. Bacteria naturally reside in biofilms as complex communities encased in a self-assembled slime. This lifestyle protects bacteria from medical therapies and promotes resistance contributing to therapeutic failure and exacerbation. The rise of superbugs stresses the need for novel treatments.

The Richter Lab is dedicated to improve medical therapies, changing the lives of patients suffering from superbug infections, such as surgical site infections, non-healing wounds and implant infections.

We furthermore collaborate with veterinary scientists to innovate industry decontamination processes for better animal wellbeing and safer, more sustainable food production.

Our research focus is on i) developing effective treatments against antibiotic-resistant bacteria and translating them from the lab to real-life applications, and ii) improving health literacy of the society by effective science communication through public speaking, science outreach activities and STEM workshops at schools.

We collaborate widely in multidisciplinary teams of scientists, clinicians and industry partners to ensure a real-world impact of our work.
